For people who suffer from hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar levels), those who tend to graze or those who are trying to lose weight, snacks between meals can be very appropriate. Some suggested options are as follows:

A piece of fruit and/or yoghurt.

A protein shake with low-fat milk (these can be prepared at the office).

A rice ball with vegetables, obtainable at health food stores.

A muesli bar or protein bar.

A note on desserts

A note on coffee

A coffee once a day after breakfast to get your day going is fine for most men but do not rely on it for your energy kick. If tired then look into the reasons why. Coffee is not the answer to long-term lethargy. If you are suffering high blood pressure, heartburn or anxiety, you should keep away from coffee altogether.

A note on alcohol

Try to drink quality wines that contain few preservatives and additives. Wines assist in the digestion of food. It is only the excessive use that will cause you liver and general constitutional problems.

If you have been advised to reduce your sodium intake, you may wonder about using a “salt substitute.” Before you try one, check with your doctor. Here’s why: 1. Some salt substitutes or “lite” salts contain a mixture of sodium chloride (salt) and other compounds. To achieve that familiar salty taste, you may end up using more of the salt substitute, and the result is that you do not reduce your sodium intake at all. 2. Potassium chloride is a common ingredient in salt substitutes. Too much potassium can be harmful for people with kidney problems or people who are taking certain medications for the treatment of high blood pressure or heart failure. Some diuretics such as amiloride (Midamor), spironolactone (Aldactone), and triamterene (Dyrenium) and medications that combine hydrochlorothiazide with one of the above generic drugs (such as Moduretic, Aldactazide, Dyazide, Maxzide) cause the kidneys to retain potassium. If you take one of these medications, you may need to limit the amount of potassium you eat.

A successful pregnancy requires the mother’s ability to take good care of herself and her unborn child. It is essential to have regular medical checkups, beginning as soon as possible (certainly within the first three months). Early detection of fetal abnormalities and identification of high-risk mothers and infants are the major purposes of prenatal care. On the first visit, the practitioner should obtain a complete medical history of the mother and her family and note any hereditary conditions that could put a woman or her fetus at risk.

Regular checkups to measure weight gain and blood pressure and to monitor the size and position of the fetus should continue throughout the pregnancy. This early care reduces infant mortality and low birth-weight. A study group for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends seven or eight prenatal visits for women with low-risk pregnancies. Unfortunately, prenatal care is not equally available to all pregnant women. Approximately 30 percent of pregnant teenagers and unmarried women do not have adequate access to prenatal care. Babies of mothers who received no prenatal care about 10 times more likely to die in the first month of life are babies of mothers who did get prenatal care.

A woman should carefully e a practitioner to attend her pregnancy and delivery. If possible, this choice should be made before she becomes ant. Recommendations from friends who were satisfied with the care they received during pregnancy may be a good starting point in the search for a practitioner. The woman’s family’ physician may also be able to recommend a specialist. The pregnant woman needs to find a practitioner she can with both her own life and that of the baby and with l she can communicate freely.

When choosing a practitioner, parents should ask a number of questions concerning credentials and professional qualifications. Besides this information, a pregnant woman must ask questions specific to her condition. Prospective parents should also inquire about the practitioner’s experience in handling various complications, commitment to being at the mother’s side during delivery, and beliefs and practices concerning the use of anesthesia, fetal monitoring, induced labor, and forceps delivery. What are the practitioner’s attitudes toward birth control, abortion, and alternative birthing procedures? The practitioner’s approach to nutrition and medication during pregnancy should be similar to the woman’s own. Finally, the parents must learn under what circumstances the practitioner would perform a cesarean section.

Two types of physicians can attend pregnancies and deliveries. The obstetrician-gynecologist (ob-gyn) is an M.D. who specializes in obstetrics (pregnancy and birth) and gynecology (care of women’s reproductive organs). These practitioners are trained to handle all types of pregnancy – and delivery-related emergencies.

A family practitioner is a licensed M.D. who provides comprehensive care for people of all ages. The majority of family practitioners has obstetrical experience but will refer a patient to a specialist if necessary. Unlike the ob-gyn, the family practitioner can serve as the baby’s physician after attending the birth.

Midwives are also experienced practitioners who can attend both pregnancies and deliveries. Certified nurse-midwives are registered nurses having specialized training in pregnancy and delivery. Most midwives work in private practice or in conjunction with physicians. Those who work with physicians have access to traditional medical facilities to which they can turn in an emergency. Lay midwives may or may not have extensive training in handling an emergency. They may be self-taught rather than trained through formal certification procedures.

Raj Narain was having chronic eczema on his foot for the last 10 years. Betnovix applied offand on only gave temporary relief.

Tracing the origin of this ailment from his case-history we found that about 10 years ago he was staying for a night with an old friend. Same night a theft took place in the house and a finger was pointed at him in doubt.

Raj Narain got the biggest shock of his life. He ceased to speak with his old friend, and developed a great hatred for him. In a few days the theft case was cleared as a house servant admitted having stolen the thing. The old friend came and apologised, but Raj Narain would not relent. The eczema started after this incident.

‘HOLLY (for hatred) and ‘Star of Bethelhem’ (for shock) was prescribed.T.D.S and after 1 week his eczema started drying up, and he could forgive his old friend and remove the rancor from his mind.

Epilepsy that does not respond to the available anticonvulsants can be enormously frustrating to patients, parents, and physicians. Therefore, it is not surprising that many other approaches to the treatment of seizures have been tried, including the addition of single or multiple vitamins in regular or megadoses to the diet, the addition of varying minerals to the diet, or the adoption of special diets. Although there are abundant testimonials to the benefits of almost everything that has been tried, there is little evidence that most of the claims are justified.

There is NO evidence that epilepsy is caused by a deficiency of vitamins, minerals, or diet. Having said that, there are rare inherited conditions that cause seizures and that will respond to the addition of a vitamin or to dietary manipulation. Could some small portion of other epilepsy cases be a consequence of unknown dietary deficiencies or excesses? It is possible, but that portion must be very small and due to very specific deficiencies. Thus, at the present time, vitamin supplements and special diets (other than the ketogenic diet discussed below) should not replace anticonvulsant therapy.

Despite anecdotal stories, there is no evidence that food allergies or the elimination diets used to control them play any role in the treatment of epilepsy.

You look in the mirror every morning to see if your hair is properly arranged or if your tie is correctly knotted. You step on a bathroom scale to check your weight. You look at the thermometer to see what the air temperature is. These are all ways you have to monitor the status of your body and the world around you.

You use the information you obtain to make corrections or changes so you can live more comfortably. You brush your hair, adjust your necktie, plan what you will or will not eat, and select the clothing you will wear to accommodate the warmth or coolness of the air.

Fortunately, today you have measurement tools to help you improve your life with diabetes -tools that weren’t available or perhaps affordable just a decade or so ago.

Through the magic of electronics and chemistry, these measurement tools can tell you what is happening inside your body. You are fortunate because these tools are readily available, inexpensive, relatively easy to use and precise enough to provide you with accurate information.

Among the most important tools available to you are the devices for measuring blood glucose. These include meters, test strips and lancing devices. The information they provide can help you adjust your diet or exercise, or even your diabetes medication if it has been prescribed, to keep your blood glucose levels within the normal range.

After severe muscular exercise the amount of blood returned by the veins to the heart increases. Something similar occurs when there is anemia, lack of oxygen, over-activity of the thyroid gland or fever Increase in materials carried in the blood occurs also in the toxemia of pregnancy, in dropsy, or with disturbances in the way in which the body uses salt and water.

As the inflow increases, the pressure in the blood vessels into which blood is pumped lessens. The heart beats more rapidly and strongly. As long as the heart can handle the change in its load of work, the patient may not be too much disturbed. When the load gets too big and the reserve power of the heart is damaged, emptying of the heart will fail to keep up with the inflow of blood. This may cause beginning failure of the heart.

If the flow of blood into the heart is inadequate, the tissues of the body will not get the blood and oxygen that they need. If this occurs suddenly, as it may do from a variety of causes, the brain does not get the blood and oxygen that it needs and the person faints or collapses. If the onset is gradual the blood vessels may accommodate themselves by contracting in less vital areas.

A sudden, severe lessening of inflow may occur after a large hemorrhage, by loss of fluid into the tissues as occurs in shock and burns, or as a result of insufficient water intake, or large loss of water as takes place in diarrhea. Pouring of much blood into the legs with large, dilated veins will lessen heart inflow, as will also some disturbances of the nervous system. Some drugs that greatly dilate veins or permit pouring of fluid into the tissues have a similar effect.

This will inevitably be one of the biggest crises in your life. You may feel your body has let you down. The thought of pain, physical and mental challenges and the possibility of dying will be uppermost in your mind at this stage. Your sense of potential loss will be magnified as you think of not being there for all the things you have envisaged . . . birthdays, graduations, weddings, and grandchildren . . . will be a recurrent theme. This is normal and inevitable. Talk with your loved ones about how scared you are. Do not store up all the anxiety because you want to ‘spare’ them. They will be just as scared and just as needful of discussion. Make a plan for yourselves on what you would like to achieve during the treatment and recovery phases.

Use this time to re-prioritize your life. Concentrate on what is really important in your life and what needs changing. Use the experience to ensure that you focus on what is best for you. Once you have beaten the cancer do not go back to your old ways…remember what have become the most important things in your life . . . good health and good relationships.

Since spread to adjacent tissues and progression to sepsis and death can occur in as little as a few hours, a high index of suspicion is essential for necrotizing soft tissue infections. Delays in diagnosis and surgical debridement have been shown to increase mortality. Although they may have different presentations, all types of necrotizing soft tissue infections have similar management principles, and any suspected case requires emergency surgical exploration and the initiation of adjunct treatment measures.

It can be difficult to differentiate necrotizing soft tissue infections from non-necrotizing skin infections. Because the deeper necrotizing infections do not initially affect the skin, symptoms and signs out of proportion to local findings are an early characteristic. Crepitus, severe pain, and systemic toxicity are uncommon in cellulitis, and these findings should always raise suspicion for a deeper process. Erysipelas usually manifests with well-demarcated borders, lymphangitis, lymphadenopathy, and minimal swelling, all of which are uncharacteristic of necrotizing fasciitis. Other clues that suggest necrotizing fasciitis include firmness of the subcutaneous tissues beyond the area of skin involvement, cutaneous anesthesia, and cellulitis that does not respond to antibiotics in 24 to 48 hours.

Recent history of trauma, surgery, or local infections should always raise the index of suspicion for a necrotizing infection. Patient risk factors such as diabetes mellitus, renal insufficiency, malnutrition, immunosupression, or history of intravenous drug use should also raise concern. However, the absence of these conditions should never rule out the possibility of a necrotizing soft tissue infection.

Jonathan’s wife left him because of his BDD. “She said that was the reason, and I think it was,” he said. “And I don’t blame her for leaving. I was totally obsessed. I’d spend weekends in bed, and I wouldn’t go out with her because of my pimples. I got so wrapped up in the problem that she really didn’t have a husband anymore. She called BDD ‘the selfish disease.’ “

Many people aren’t in a relationship at all. About two thirds of the people I’ve seen (who on average were in their early 30s) have never been married. Twenty two percent were currently married, and 12% were divorced. Many want to be in a relationship but aren’t for various reasons—self-consciousness, fear of rejection, shyness, or low self-esteem.

Warren had never pursued a relationship with a woman he liked. “All of my relationships have been with women who pursued me,” he said. “I’ve never been in a relationship with someone I liked because of my appearance. I’ve felt undesirable. I’ve stayed single so I don’t inflict myself on anyone else.” “I’d never ask a girl out,” Paul told me. “I’m too shy, and I have the BDD problem. It affects all of my relationships, especially with girls. I totally avoid girls. I don’t even think of being intimate with them. It paralyzes me socially.”

When people avoid dating and social activities so they aren’t rejected, this can create a vicious cycle that makes them more and more isolated. A young man who refused to ask anyone out because of his hair was certain that no woman would ever want to date him, let alone marry him. When I pointed out that in fact he might not ever date if he didn’t ask women out and if he continued to avoid social gatherings where he might meet them, he was surprised. He had assumed the reason he wasn’t dating was because women found him so unappealing. He didn’t realize the extent to which he himself was cremating his dateless situation by avoiding women.
